Hong Xiangxi

Hong Xiangxi, originally from a chemical background and seeking a life of tranquility and poetry, transitioned into full-time ceramics in 2017. In 2020, he opened HXX Pottery Studio. His works are primarily handmade and adorned with engobe, making each piece one of a kind, impossible to replicate. He currently resides in Jingdezhen, nestled near the mountains.

Hong draws profound inspiration from the natural world—flora and fauna, landscapes, spiritual imagery, and celestial bodies. His artistic focus is on exploring how to convey narrative depth through simple, approachable forms, colors, patterns, and decorative techniques. The art emphasizes a personal perspective, inviting viewers to consider different spatial and temporal viewpoints and the connections between things. His works encourage deeper contemplation and are often described as spontaneous, serene yet striking, rugged, fragmentary, ancient, unbound, evocative, abstract, textural, meditative, and distant.

The pieces are primarily formed using saggar clay slabs, with surface decorations predominantly featuring colored glazes and slip. Some works are created through wheel-throwing and trimming techniques, enhanced with richly textured colored glazes. The collection also includes various distinctive hand-pinched sculptures in coarse clay, embellished with slip decorations and gold or silver leaf applications.
